Smart . How to Install Rear Brake Pads & Rotors on a 2000 JettaThe 2000 VW Jetta was a popular four-door sedan when it was new, combining high-quality German engineering, simple yet handsome styling and decent performance. The 2000 Jetta is still popular as a second-hand purchase. As with any car, the brakes on a Jetta must be periodically replaced. This is a job that can be performed by a professional mechanic or by a home mechanic with the right tools and approach. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Floor jack 2 jack stands Socket set and ratchet Brake cleaner Rags Pliers VW caliper-piston tool Brake fluid New brake pads New brake rotors Step by Step : 1 Loosen the lug nuts that fasten the rear wheels to the car with a tire iron or even the appropriately sized socket. Raise the back end of the car with a jack and lower it onto jack stands. Finish the removal of the wheels. 2 Remove the caliper bolts, located on the top and bottom of the caliper facing the wheel well. Pull the large caliper spring clips off the caliper with a pair of pliers. Slide the caliper off the rotor. Tie the caliper to a nearby suspension piece or place it on platform so there is no weight on the brake line. Remove the bolts that hold the caliper carrier in place. Set the caliper carrier aside. 3 With a screwdriver, remove the small set-screw that holds the rotor to the hub. Pull the rotor straight off the hub. Spray brake cleaner on the hub-mounting surface and wipe it down with a clean, dry rag. Install the new rotor by sliding it onto the hub. Reinstall the set-screw. 4 Remove the lid for the brake-fluid reservoir in the engine bay. Remove about a one-half-inch of fluid from the reservoir with a syringe or similar tool. This is to prevent the fluid from overflowing when you compress the piston in the caliper. 5 Remove the old inner and outer brake pads. Spray the caliper with brake cleaner and wipe it down with a clean, dry rag. Place the special caliper-piston retracting tool (see Resources) onto the caliper piston. Turn the tool so that it pushes and turns the piston into the caliper. Install the new brake pads in the reverse of removal and in the same orientation as the old ones. 6 Reinstall the caliper bracket. Slide the caliper over the rotor. Install the caliper bolts and the caliper spring clips. Repeat the above steps for the opposite side of the vehicle. Put the wheels back on the car and lower it to the ground. Top up the brake fluid in the reservoir to the full mark. Pump the brakes until the pedal feels firm again. ResourcesECS Tuning: VW/Audi Brake Caliper Tool
Smart . How to Install the Rear Brakes on a 1996 Ford RangerThe 1996 Ford Ranger comes equipped with a front disc and rear drum anti-lock brake system. With this system the front brakes provide up to 80 percent of the stopping power of the entire brake system. As a result, the front brakes will require replacement more often. However, as the rear brakes wear, a low brake pedal and inoperative parking brake can result. Replacement of the rear brakes on this truck can be accomplished by the average home mechanic in a couple of hours. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Wheel chocks Floor jack Jack stands Hammer Drum brake tools New brake shoes Soapy water Scrub brush Brake parts cleaner Silicon brake grease Step by Step : 1 Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels about one half turn. Do not remove them at this time. Place wheel chocks behind the front wheels and lift the rear wheels off the ground with the floor jack. Place a jack stand under each rear axle tube and lower the truck onto the stands to prevent accidents. Remove the rear wheels and place them out of the way. 2 Slide the rear brake drums off the brake system. If they are stuck, a few sharp blows with a hammer around the outside edge of the drum will loosen them enough to slide off. Occasionally soaking the drum, around the hub, with penetrating oil will be required. Wash the brake system with soapy water and a small scrub brush to prevent excessive dust that can be harmful if inhaled. 3 Remove the two long return springs, that attach the brake shoes to the pivot pin at the top of the system, using a brake return spring tool. Pull out the brake equalizer bar from between the top of the brake shoes. Remove the hold down springs, that attach the brake shoes to the backing plate, using a hold down spring tool. Fold the shoes together to allow the star wheel and adjuster lever to drop from the bottom of the shoes and remove the lower spring. Separate the secondary shoe (closest to the rear of the truck) from the parking brake lever by removing the horseshoe shaped retaining clip. 4 Clean the springs, equalizer bar, self adjuster and backing plate with brake parts cleaner. Apply a small amount of silicon brake grease to the contact points on the backing plate. Attach the primary shoe (closest to the front of the truck) to the backing plate with a hold down spring. The primary shoe can be identified by the shorter brake lining. Attach the secondary shoe to the parking brake lever using a horseshoe shaped clip. Attach the secondary shoe to the backing plate with a hold down spring. 5 Position the equalizer bar between the two shoes. Hold the adjuster cable out of the way, and attach the shoes to the pivot pin with the return springs. Insert the adjuster lever into the primary shoe and attach the lower spring to it and the secondary shoe. Attach the adjuster cable to the adjuster lever. Pull the lower edge of the shoes apart and slip the star wheel adjuster into place. Slide the drum over the shoes. Turn the star wheel through the back of the backing plate, using a brake adjusting tool, until the shoes contact the drum. 6 Repeat the process for the remaining brake. Reinstall the wheels and lower the truck to the ground. Test drive to verify the repair. Tips & Warnings This article assumes that you are using new brake shoes and drums. If you intend to reuse the old drums, have them turned by a machine shop. If you have jack stands, place them under the car, near the place where the jack is touching the vehicle (see Figure 1-2). Raise the stands until they are high enough to just fit under, and lock them in place. Lower the jack until the car is resting on the jack stands. Then remove the jack. Substituting boxes, stones, or bricks for jack stands is very dangerous. They can slip out or break while you're under the car. A jack can do the same thing, so if you're going to work under your car (and you will if you plan to change your own oil and do your own lube jobs), be sure to buy a pair of jack stands. The money you save by getting under there yourself will pay for the stands in 122

Before you begin to work, wiggle the car a little to make sure that it's resting securely on the jack or the jack stands. Doing so also tells you whether you have the wheels blocked properly. It's better if the vehicle falls while all four wheels are in place. (It will bounce just a little.) If you remove a wheel and begin to work without making sure that you jacked up the car and blocked it securely, it can do a lot of damage to itself — and to you — if it falls. (This is not meant to frighten you away from jacking up your car and working on or under it. It's just to emphasize the fact that a few simple precautions will remove any danger.) Smart .
